Living Room

The Virkki Home Museum shows a spiritual, artistic appreciation of industrial design that is intensifying in modernism. With post-war reconstruction and urbanization, a new purposeful and aesthetically sustainable residential milieu was created. The home furnishings are the work of leading designers of the time (including Werner West, Lasse Ollinkari, Mirja Orvola, Paavo Tynell, Tapio Wirkkala, Lisa Johansson-Pape, Rut Bryk, Maija Kansanen, Margaretha Ahlstedt-Willandt, Kyllikki Salmenhaara).

Virkki had acquired an apartment in a newly completed house in 1952. When decorating the home, she followed the new creative ideals of the 1940s and 1950s, which superseded prior lack and limitations with the practical aesthetics from everyday life, the art industry, and an appreciation of high-quality craftsmanship.
